Suggestions for Parish Leaders

Minutes of Parish Leaders Meeting October 29, 2006
Courtenay Hall 5:00 PM

Sandra Randleman opened the meeting with words of inspiration and a prayer. Dean Reeves, the parish Ministry representative on the Diaconate, talked about the "Parish News" e-mail. Several Parish Leaders were not at this meeting because they do not drive after dark.

As Parish Leaders, please contact those who are sick or have other life events in your parishes. That is our primary job as Parish Leaders -care and contact. Ask the person you contact if they would like to have a minister call them. The Parish News" that is received by e-mail and in hard copy form is for Parish Leaders to let them know who needs contact and care in their parishes. It was originally and primarily designed for that. It has now grown to a news letter for FPC members but it is still for Parish Leaders. Those who do not have computers may pick up a hard copy in the office area.
When you send a card or make a call, tell the recipient that you as well as the parish send their love.
Call Carolyn Gustafson if anyone needs "Meals on Wheels". Each meal costs $2 unless someone cannot pay.

We introduced ourselves and told where our parishes are and what we are doing lately.
One small parish goes to Sunday lunch together every Sunday after church.
Cheek House may be used for parish parties if Amelia fills out a facilities request. She also makes invitations, labels and mails them. This is at the expense of the church.
It was suggested that the envelopes carrying Parish party invitations have another return address besides First Presbyterian Church.
Combined parish parties are sometimes a good idea. Some have been very successful. Parish Parties should not cost a great deal but cups, napkins and plates will always have to be provided.

Suggestions for parish parties included chili parties with members bringing crock pots filled with their chili recipes. Picnics in parks. Hors d'oeurves to share with people bringing their own wine. Soft drinks would be provided by Parish Leader hosts. If you would like to take a group to the zoo, call George Armistead. Ballgames. Lunch at Cheek House after
church with lunch catered. At another (after Kirkin'?) all-church lunch on the grounds, have parishes sit together to eat. Cookie exchange. "Sundaes on a Sunday" with ice cream and sprinkles provided by hosts in the summertime. A Watch Titans party.
A NEW MEMBER IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS A GREAT REASON TO HAVE A PARTY TO INTRODUCE THEM TO THEIR CHURCH NEIGHBORS.
**No matter what kind of party you have, you must call the people in your parish you don't hear from. People respond better to phone calls than they do to e-mails.**

BLUE CARDS HAVE BEEN PRINTED AT SANDRA'S SUGGESTION FOR PARISH LEADERS TO SEND TO NEW MEMBERS IN THEIR PARISHES. THE CARDS SHOULD CONTAIN THEIR PARISH NUMBER AS WELL AS THE NAMES OF THEIR PARISH LEADERS. AMELIA WILL MAIL A CARD TO THE LEADER WHEN HIS/HER PARISH HAS A NEW MEMBER.

The meeting was adjourned with a prayer from Amelia.
